My love of photography
dates back to my first experience with a camera, a point-and-shoot
Minolta my parents gave to me for my 12th birthday. Growing up,
photography became something interesting to do in the outdoors while
on long camping trips during the summer. And the eager anticipation
of waiting for my pile of processed slides to come back in the mail
is a joy I will never forget. Over the years the hobby became more
serious as I transitioned to 35mm SLR's and medium format, from
mail-in processing at the supermarket to a home made color darkroom,
and finally from film to professional quality digital imaging and
printmaking. Photography has become a passion for me, but not a
job. I do sell prints to cover the costs of materials and equipment,
but my primary goal is to share my enjoyment of nature with others.
My parents were Lithuanian and German immigrants and raised me in
Downey, California. I attended Harvey Mudd College in nearby Claremont,
majoring in chemistry, and went on to medical school at the U. of
California, Irvine. I spent a year completing my internship in Seattle,
where I fell in love with the spectacular Northwest scenery. After
I completed my residency at the U. of Utah in Salt Lake City, I
made an easy decision to return to Seattle for a fellowship at the
U. of Washington and began my career here in radiology. I initially
worked as a traveling radiologist which allowed me to pursue my
love of photography both inside the human body and out exploring
the natural world. I worked and traveled in various locations in
Washington, Utah, Alaska, Hawaii and New Zealand, and have work
on display at multiple hospitals and imaging centers in those locations.
In 2003, I founded Lightscape Gallery at the suggestion of friends
who encouraged me to share my images. Recently, I have settled down
in Issaquah, located just east of Seattle. I have been actively
displaying my work in various venues in the Seattle area, and keeping
myself busy planning my next photographic adventure.
My artistic
philosophy is to create images that most closely reflect the actual
scene that I visualized at the instant the photograph was made.
No digital manipulation beyond minor corrections of contrast and
color balance are performed. I currently use a 16 megapixel Canon
1Ds Mark II Digital SLR with a 16-28 mm wide-angle, a 24-70 mm telephoto, a 100-400 mm image-stabilized telephoto, and a 500 mm f/4 IS supertelephoto. I also carry a Canon
1.4 and 2x extender, 2.5 cm macro extension tube, Hoya UV and circular polarizing
filters, and a Gitzo G1228 and GT3530 carbon fiber tripod. For underwater photography,
I use a Canon G5 in an Ikelite underwater housing with a DS-125
substrobe.
